Cemal Süreya (1931 -1985) was a Turkish poet, writer, and intellectual who played a significant role in the Turkish literary scene during the mid-20th century. He was associated with the Garip movement, which aimed to bring everyday language into poetry and to reject traditional poetic forms. Süreya was known for his innovative use of language and experimental approach to poetry. He wrote several collections of poetry, including “Karanlıkta Sabah” (Morning in Darkness) and “Beni Öp, Sonra Doğur” (Kiss Me, Then Give Birth To Me) and he also wrote essays and literary criticism. Süreya was a leftist and a significantly intellectual figure in Turkey and has had a lasting impact on Turkish literature and poetry.
